You’ve got questions,
WE’VE GOT ANSWERS!
If the idea of “Dairy Full and Lactose Free” puts your brain into a pretzel, view some of our most frequently asked questions and answers below to learn all about how we do it at Beckon. If you still can’t find the answer to your question, feel free to reach out to us!
We use all of the same ingredients as traditional ice cream – milk, cream, eggs, sugar – plus the lactase enzyme to make it lactose-free. Beckon tastes like real ice cream, because it is real ice cream!
We add in the lactase enzyme, which your body produces naturally to break down the lactose sugar found in dairy. We do the process ourselves so that we can use rBST hormone free milk sourced from 100% farmer-owned co-ops in the Northeast region.
Beckon ice cream uses the same ingredients as traditional ice cream so it tastes the same (if not better, if we do say so ourselves).
Common dairy alternatives include sorbet, coconut, soy, almond, rice, and hemp. Dairy-free options are great if you are vegan or have a dairy allergy. However, if you crave the rich, creamy taste and texture of real, premium ice cream – Beckon is your answer!
Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, Beckon uses really simple ingredients with a clean label. You won’t find any of the gums, artificial stabilizers or corn syrup found in many other ice creams! Eating lactose free also contributes to easier digestion and is considered low FODMAP diet friendly.
No. Beckon ice cream is not vegan – we use milk and eggs in our ice cream.
Beckon is produced in a facility that processes gluten and, therefore, cannot claim gluten-free.
Some of our flavors do contain soy. All Beckon flavors are produced in a facility that processes soy.
While we do not classify our ice cream as low-calorie or low in sugar, we pride ourselves on delicious ice cream using clean ingredients.
Beckon is currently available nationwide at Whole Foods Market and Sprouts, select Kroger and Walmart locations and many other regional and independent retailers throughout the country. To find the store nearest you, please click here.
Lactose, the sugar found in milk, is a disaccharide (two molecules held together by a bond). Because our bodies can only absorb monosaccharides (single molecules), they need the lactase enzyme to cut the bond and turn lactose into digestible single sugars (glucose and galactose).
Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, the sugar naturally found in milk. People who suffer from lactose intolerance cannot make any or enough lactase, which is the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose.
While you can be tested for lactose intolerance by a medical professional, the simplest way to discern for yourself if you are lactose intolerant is to go without dairy for a few days and then note if you experience any gastrointestinal distress when you reintroduce it back into your diet. Many lactose intolerant people experience symptoms like stomach aches and other pains when eating dairy products. However, we encourage you to consult your doctor to accurately determine if you are indeed lactose intolerant.
If you are allergic to dairy, you may be allergic to the casein and whey proteins found in milk. If you are lactose intolerant, you lack the enzymes to break down the lactose sugar. The reactions of each vary, so we suggest consulting your doctor.
Of course! We do all the work of breaking down the ice cream so you don’t have to. This way you get the taste and texture of traditional ice cream without compromising your stomach.
Lactose intolerance severity and symptoms vary from person to person, so some people are affected than the others. Also, different dairy products have varying amounts of lactose. Certain hard cheeses naturally have low or no lactose, whereas cream has a very high content of lactose. Luckily, Beckon ice cream is completely lactose free and can be eaten by all!
Unfortunately, no. We use real milk and cream for our base, which contains casein.
Nope! We get all our ice cream tested by a food scientist to ensure everything is completely lactose free.

Our company is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, but we have team members from Boston, to New York, to Los Angeles.
We first launched Beckon at the SOWA farmers market in Boston’s South End in 2015. Following overwhelmingly positive reception from consumers, we launched our ice cream onto supermarket shelves in the spring/summer of 2016.
We are a certified women-owned business.
We are hoping to grow our team soon! Feel free to send your resume or any inquiries to hello@beckonicecream.com.
To ensure your ice cream arrives frozen, we pack each shipment with special insulation and dry ice. Frozen shipping is serious stuff, so we add a little price buffer so we can get it right.
