Our Story

This is a story of Katy and Gwen, two ice cream lovers who believed in making the impossible possible: a life where lactose-free ice cream had the same richness and decadence as premium lactose-full ice cream. Their woman-powered business is propelled by the notion that if you work hard enough, surround yourself with the right people, and never give up, you can get exactly what you want, the way you want it. Well, mostly. #ThatStartUpLife

The Very Beginning

Originally titled ‘Minus The Moo’, Katy and Gwen started their company selling at the local Farmer’s Market in Boston, MA. There were many (and that’s an understatement) days and nights of churning ice cream in the commercial kitchens, stickering pint containers, and beckoning family and friends to help bring lactose-free decadence to life.

The First Shelfie

Moving into stores, the first location was: Golden Goose Market in the North End! One can only imagine the happy tears rolling down Katy and Gwen’s cheeks when they saw their lactose-free deliciousness stacked right next to the founding fathers of ice cream: Ben and Jerry’s pints!

Surprisingly Sweet Accidents

The OG flavors that were offered at the Boston Farmer’s Market were: Vanilla, Chocolate, Espresso, and Sea Salt Chocolate Chip. Haven’t heard of a Sea Salt Chocolate Chip flavor before? That’s because it was an accident born out of the kitchen! One day when Katy was making ice cream for the Farmer’s Market, she accidentally spilled a tad too much salt and, well.. now it’s a top selling flavor!

We’re Beckoning You

After a year of significant growth, lots of memories, sweat, and tears (of joy of course!), Minus The Moo became what is well known today: Beckon Ice Cream. Beckon Ice Cream is calling you back to REAL ice cream, just lactose-free. After all, ice cream is our calling (pun intended, and encouraged).
